Stringhalt is characterised by a change in hind leg gait where there is exaggerated flexion of the hind legs when moving. Either a single or both legs are affected. Occasionally the front legs or other parts of the body may also be affected, such as the larynx, which can lead to problems breathing.

Just like people horses are also prone to develop arthritis, especially horses that undertake a heavy work schedule such as racehorses and performance horses. In many horses arthritis can present as lameness, but often the signs are more subtle such as a general reduction in activity or performance level; or increased or decreased time spent lying down.
